The tradition of Halloween traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of „Samhain“, which marked the harvest. On this day, people lit bonfires and wore various costumes to ward off evil spirits.
Over time, it transformed into a joyful community celebration, with carved pumpkins and children dressed in costumes going on sweet-collecting adventures.
Using the Montessori approach, we celebrated this day in a way that allowed children to enjoy the fun associated with Halloween while also understanding its historical and cultural meaning:
• We explored where and why this tradition originated and how it changed over time;
• We learned about autumn festivals in different countries;
• We discussed historical costumes and their significance;
• We studied the natural life cycle of a pumpkin as a fruit, from firmness to decay;
• We created handmade crafts inspired by autumn and pumpkins.
At the end of the day, dressed festively, we enjoyed a delicious pumpkin together.
